So
i was listening to Radio 1 today and Newsbeat came on with the news
update. It had a story about Student deaths due to heavy or excessive
alcohol consumption. It focused mainly on the recent deaths of 3
students in the River Wear. The students were all studying at Durham
University.
So now we have
an uproar from the students saying that the police are blaming them for
the deaths that have tragically occurred. I think in my honest opinion
they couldn't be more wrong. The authorities are simply asking you to
take care of yourself and use some common sense for once.
I'm
not saying people shouldn't go out and enjoy themselves, do go out and
enjoy yourself, you work hard its only right that you have the chance to
relax and unwind but take responsibility for your actions. You are the
next generation of leaders in this world, act like it. You cant blame
some one else for your actions.
So
the students are angry that they are being looked after, which i find
incredibly preposterous. I some times get the feeling that some students
just make this stuff up just so they can get on the news or what have
you. Its ridiculous to be angry because some one has your safety as
their priority, were you angry at your parents for birthing you and
caring for you?
So what
needs to happen now? Simple, any student who is too intoxicated to look
after themselves should be arrested and charged with a public order
offence in that they were drunk and incapable. A night in the cells and a
solid fine should be enough to deter those who think that getting off
their face regularly is acceptable. Its time students wake up to the
real world and understand that their actions have consequences.
The
next thing that needs to be looked into is how to protect students from
the river? Not my area of expertise im afraid. I certainly don't think
that a fence running the length of the river will do any good because it
wont be too long before you have them scaling the fence and falling in
and then having no way of getting out. A fence is an obstacle that needs
to be tackled by drunks. Its just how people act when they are drunk. I
mean i have friends that get so mortal that even a kerb is a challenge
to be scaled.
You may be
thinking why i have aimed this at students and not mentioned the wider
general public. Its quite simple to explain, the general public are not
drowning in the river, the general public are not getting so off their
face they think going near the river is a good idea. Students are doing
all of the above so that's why its directed directly at students because
its simply students bodies that are being dragged out of the water.
With
all of the above said, i do have to mention that many students have
never lived away from home before. 90% of them don't know how to look
after themselves, cook, clean etc. As the saying goes when the cats away
the mice will come out to play. And its a clear picture of that when
these kids are away from mum and dad they get their first real taste of
freedom, but they don't embrace it in the correct manner, they abuse it
from the get go.
Yes go out
and have a few drinks, a few doesn't mean you get so steaming drunk you
become a burden on other people, it means limit your self have a few and
show some self control over your drinking. Its not clever and it really
isn't impressive either. It shows a clear lack of maturity and lack of
self control.
I only hope
and pray that no more students end up in the river. And i do hope that
the local authorities find a way to protect students from them selves
until they reach a level of maturity where by they can then take the
reigns for themselves.
To
all students in the UK, don't blame some one else for your own
stupidity. You have a choice, you can go out and get so trashed and
potentially not wake up the next day or you can go out and have a good
night and wake up the next day. Ultimately the choice really is down to
you. Choose wisely.
Lastly
have some appreciation for the fact that something is being done to
keep you safe. You ought to be grateful that some one is trying to
prevent another family tragedy and another young life being lost too
soon.
